Youko Kurama is a Youkai Kitsune (demon fox) living in Makai for four centuries or so. He was a thief, a very good one actually. He led a group of demons in stealing.

He was cold, cruel, fearless and I might say, very beautiful. A powerful demon who never cared for anyone but himself. He possesses a limitless ability of controlling plants and usually seen fighting with his frequently used weapon, the rose whip.

For a very long time he reigns as the king of thieves for he was really good at what he does. But one fateful night came, Kurama was badly wounded as he was shot by a hunter. Death was already knocking at his door and he was not prepared to open.

Frustrated, Kurama thought of a way to escape his nearing end. And so he thought of one, sneaking into the Human World and entering a body of a human.

Kurama entered a body of a human baby boy in the womb of a woman named Shiori Minamino. He was named Shuuichi when he was born. But deep inside the innocent looking baby, he was still Kurama, the cold, the cruel, the thief.

And so few years had passed. He grew up like any normal human baby would. He was showered with love by his human mother. And little by little, the thief in him died. He learned how to love and how to care, and all of this he owed to his mother. Kurama, now Shuuichi, was not the same Kurama that was in Makai years ago.

Shuuichi grew up pretending to be human. Nobody knows who he really was. He kept it to himself. He discovered that he can still use his power to control plants and he also found out that his power is now limited. He cannot use it the same way he does back in Makai. But he did not mind. He was contented, he is not asking for more.

Shuuichi loves his mother so much that he was willing to sacrifice everything for her, even his life. After all, he owes his mother the life she had given him. It was not the life he was expecting as a thief, it was far better than that. It was the life he least expected he would live, but loved it so much. He was a good son. A very good one.

He entered school and excelled. Having the brains and the good looks to go with it, he was quite popular in school especially with the girls often seen trying to catch his attention.

Besides from being the popular kid, he is also a brother. When his mom married, Shuuichi found himself brothering a much younger Hatanaka Shuuichi. As a brother, he was protective. He cares for his brother and would do anything to keep harm away from him. Shuuichi (Hatanaka) in return, respects his older stepbrother. He looks up to him like any younger brother would look up to an older brother. Shuuichi, shall I say, was a good brother. As a stepson, I cannot say the same though he was a fine one.

When he met the spiritual detective, he ended up being his friend and ally. He found himself fighting again but with a different reason, he was fighting for humanity, for peace in the Human World, protecting innocent people.

But his power decreased. Not slightly, but much. Despite of his less power, he never backed down in a fight. He was a warrior, a smart one. He thinks twice before doing anything, he plays by the rule, reasons whenever he has to and plans his every move. He was the brain of the group, the thinker, the cautious, the calm.

At the latter part of the series, his capabilities of acquiring the same amount of power that he has when he was still in Makai came back as well as his old youko form. He can freely transform from being human to demon whenever he feels intense emotions. But he prefers being human. The demon in him died long ago. He is now Shuuichi Minamino.

Kurama is a quiet, polite, studious, gentle 15 year old boy with long red hair and a bent for biology --- but he is actually a many hundred-year old demonic fox, who is pretty much trapped in his human body. Kurama in demonic "Yohko" fox form is a cruel, heartless demon, but his human "mother" has taught him something of human love and sacrifice. His main power is the ability to create and manipulate any plant (He prefers roses)
